Ross' Weekly Sip: Paul Bara Bouzy Brut Rosé Grand Cru

In a region dominated by large production houses, there are a handful of great grower producers emerging with their own outstanding expressions of Champagne. As the holidays roll around, Mike’s Wine & Spirits has put a new emphasize on highlighting these small, artisanal growers.

What is a grower-producer of Champagne exactly?  Well, you can always tell them by the letters RM located somewhere on the bottle, but they are so much more than that.  Grower Champagnes are wines in which the grapes are grown on an individual’s estate, and then vinified in their own wineries also located on the estate.  This may seem like common place in many of the world’s great wine regions, but when you factor in the cost of land, the cost of bottling sparkling wine, and the time it takes for said wine to age in the winery (a minimum of three years for vintage dated wines), the risk is hefty, but well worth the reward.  The final product shows a sense of place, and individual style of grape and technique that is unique to those of the big houses (Veuve, Moet, Roederer, etc…) who rely on grapes from across the region to recreate the same wine year in and year out.

One of the wineries I am most excited about, Paul Bara, a seventh-generation grower producer, is one of the most exciting Rosé Champagne producers today. Hailing from the Grand Cru village of Bouzy, in the Montagne de Reims, Paul farms 26 acres of vines primarily planted to Pinot Noir.

I won’t dig too deep into the history of the Club Trésors de Champagne, or as we know it, the Special Club, but do know that only 29 producers have been invited to showcase their wines through the club and they are sought after as the greatest of the growers in Champagne.  Paul Bara was one of the founding members in 1971 and is still today the only producer to be granted the status for a Rosé wine.

As a limited offering for the season, Mike’s Wine & Spirits will be stocking Paul Bara’s Bouzy Brut Rosé Grand Cru at all three locations.  While you’re in, check out our entirely new line of grower-producers, all contributing to the best sparkling wines in the world.
